‘Felix Culpa’ is a Latin phrase that means ‘happy fault’ and is used in the Catholic Church to refer to Adam and Eve's fall from grace. It was a 'happy fault' because it was the catalyst for Jesus becoming man and showing His immeasurable love by dying for us. He redeemed their error. In an exceedingly small way, I like to think of my art processes as felix culpa moments. I make a lot of errors, but they can all be redeemed.
As they say, practice makes progress.

A Book of Revelations, Design for pp. 1-2

During the Italian Renaissance, two schools of thought came about to describe the ideation and creation of paintings. One was named 'disegno' and was associated with the Florentine way while the other was 'colore' and was associated with the Venetian way. The former emphasized planning, order, logic, drawing, linework, and composition. On the other hand, the latter focused on movement, emotion, freeform design, and dramatic light and color. The former could be seen as masculine, and the latter, feminine.
After thinking about this, I decided that it would be interesting to make one side of the book, the attack against Catholicism, be represented by this orderly and linework-heavy method while the rebuttal would be represented by the emotional and painterly method.

A Book of Revelations, Research for pp. 1-2

One of the top complaints by feminists is that the Catholic Church is a 'patriarchy.' Admittedly, before I researched this piece, I almost agreed with them. By a quick glance, it definitely appeared as if men/priests/bishops/the Pope called all the shots. Where did women have a place of power? Where was their authority?

A Book of Revelations, the Cover

I lack the words to fully explain what this piece means to me but I'll try my best to describe what I wanted to say with it. Being a female, and a self proclaimed feminist (no, I don't hate men. I'm simply a pro-life from womb to tomb woman who wants us females to truly know about our reproductive organs/cycles without being told that The Pill will solve all our issues. And who thinks having the ability to vote is pretty rad too. I call myself a feminist because it starts up some great conversations with liberals and conservatives alike), I had a lot of friends and acquaintances who questioned how I could reconcile that aspect of myself with my Roman Catholic beliefs.
I ignored and shrugged off their comments until I realized why I didn't want to think about them. I didn't have answers to them. Some of their complaints made sense to me. And, dare I say it, some I agreed with. The fact that I wasn't sure about these aspects of my faith that seemed at odds with my core beliefs made me unsettled. What if I delved into this, really delved into this, and I didn't like the information I found? The more I meditated on it, the more ill at ease I became until I decided to find answers one way or the other.

And thus, this project was born.

Ark of the Covenants

This piece is about the symbolism between the Ark of the Covenants in the Old and New Testaments. Most people are familiar with the Old Testament version because of the Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Even though the movie does a great depiction of the ark, no one knows exactly what it looked like since it's been lost to antiquity. However, there is an exceedingly detailed description in the book of Exodus that helps us to imagine it. The ark was created in order to house 3 important objects to Judaism:
  • the rod of Aaron (which designated the true priesthood),
  • manna (it was provided to the Jewish people during their desert wanderings after the Exodus)
  • the Ten Commandments (which was the Word of God).

The ark was placed in the Temple in the Holy of Holies, the most sacred of areas. It was shielded with a veil that the High Priest would enter only once a year.

A part of Catholic theology that is less well-known is how there is a parallel Ark of the Covenant in the New Testament.
