‘Felix Culpa’ is a Latin phrase that means ‘happy fault’ and is used in the Catholic Church to refer to Adam and Eve's fall from grace. It was a 'happy fault' because it was the catalyst for Jesus becoming man and showing His immeasurable love by dying for us. He redeemed their error. In an exceedingly small way, I like to think of my art processes as felix culpa moments. I make a lot of errors, but they can all be redeemed.
As they say, practice makes progress.

Ark of the Covenants

This piece is about the symbolism between the Ark of the Covenants in the Old and New Testaments. Most people are familiar with the Old Testament version because of the Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Even though the movie does a great depiction of the ark, no one knows exactly what it looked like since it's been lost to antiquity. However, there is an exceedingly detailed description in the book of Exodus that helps us to imagine it. The ark was created in order to house 3 important objects to Judaism:
  • the rod of Aaron (which designated the true priesthood),
  • manna (it was provided to the Jewish people during their desert wanderings after the Exodus)
  • the Ten Commandments (which was the Word of God).

The ark was placed in the Temple in the Holy of Holies, the most sacred of areas. It was shielded with a veil that the High Priest would enter only once a year.

A part of Catholic theology that is less well-known is how there is a parallel Ark of the Covenant in the New Testament.
It's Mary. She is the Ark of the Covenant. The New Covenant. The parallels are strikingly similar between the two.

Let's break down the similarities and analyze them further.
Indication of God's presence
After the Ark of the Old Covenant was created, God descended in a cloud and overshadowed the area. Then the veil was put in place as an external symbol that indicated God's presence.
In the New Testament, St. Luke says in his Gospel that the Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary.

Outer covering
God gave exceedingly detailed instruction for the construction of the wooden ark that was covered in gold. Every attribute was carefully thought out, communicated, and described. However, God tasked human hands with the creation of it so it wasn't perfect.
The parallel here would be Mary's womb. For every detail that was carried out by human hands for the Old Covenant Ark, how much more perfect and more carefully created would Mary and her womb be since they were formed by God's hands?

Inspiration Behind Ark of the Covenants

After I researched modern Catholic artists, I discovered the work of Michael Schrauzer. Click here to be taken to his website to view his gallery of work. His paintings are quiet and meditative- two attributes that I wanted to infuse into this piece. Most importantly though, a lot of his pieces had wood doors that opened and revealed inner scenes. They were very reminiscent of a tabernacle, which holds the Eucharist near the altar in Catholic churches. Since Mary (who carried Jesus in her womb) can also be seen as a tabernacle, I wanted this symbolism in this piece as well. As a result, I designed multiple doors that with each opening, revealed a new, inner layer.

Sketching Out Design

You can see from my sketches that I originally designed the left side/Old Testament side to be a square and the right side/New Testament side to be a rectangle. A square is symbolic of the earth while a rectangle could be based off Fibonacci proportions (which indicates perfection found in nature, a fitting idea to show the perfection found in Mary). However, as I fleshed out the design, I realized that the different shapes created a visual separation between the two arks, the opposite of my intention. I wanted to show the similarity so I decided to keep both sides as rectangles. I enjoy packing as much symbolism as I can into my artworks but I'm learning that there is a limit, especially if it's hurting the main goal of the piece.
You may have noticed that the left/Old Testament side of Ark of the Covenants uses physical objects while the right/New Testament side uses paint to represent actions or people. This is because the left side focuses on man-made objects like the veil that separated the Holy of Holies, the Ark of the (Old) Covenant, and the contents of the Ark like the rod of Aaron, the Ten Commandments, and manna. They were all man's way of representing God's presence on earth. However, in the New Testament, God is creating His own symbolism. He chooses to have people personify the Ark and its content. I thought that the best way to symbolize this was to render everything in paint so there'd be a contrast with all of the objects on the left.

Meaning of the Outer Doors

Indication of God's presence
As I wrote earlier on, the veil that shielded the Holy of Holies in the Old Testament acted to both indicate and conceal God's presence. Nowadays, veils are used to cover tabernacles, indicating that there is a life-bearing presence. This is one of the reasons why women wear mantillas/veils in Mass.

Color: purple
To represent God's presence that overshadows Mary during the Annunciation, I painted a scene that could either be a sunrise or sunset.  A beginning of a new day, a new life, and a setting of another.

Color: yellow

Meaning of the Middle Doors

To represent the gold covered, wooden Ark of the Old Covenant, I used bark that I broke into several pieces, then randomly applied gold leaf to sections of it. This was to indicate the imperfection found in its creation. No matter how much time or effort the artists put into creating the Ark, because they were human beings, there were imperfections. The background color was applied in messy strokes to further highlight this idea.

Color: orange
To represent Mary's womb, I painted an egg. You may also notice the Fibonacci spiral outlining the egg. If you're not familiar, the Fibonacci spiral is a commonly occurring mathematical pattern that frequently shows up in nature. It can also indicate perfection found in nature, which is a fitting way to describe Mary. Fun fact: the size of the egg is the average size of a uterus. I tried to make the background gradient as seamless as possible to show this idea of perfection.

Color: blue

Meaning of the Innermost Level

Contents
To indicate the contents of the Ark of the Old Covenant, I used various objects:
Rod of Aaron: a slice of a branch
Manna: an unconsecrated* host
Ten Commandments: a rock

Color: green

*Unconsecrated means it's not the Eucharist; it's simply bread.
To indicate Jesus in Mary's womb, I decided to paint an 8-week old baby in the middle of the gold leaf. The baby is the same size of an average 8-week old.

Color: red/pink (found in the baby's skin tone)

Meaning of Colors

Complementary colors, when placed close to each other, enhance each other's intensity. Kind of like how, when you place both the arks next to each other, they enhance each other and bring out their fullest meaning. I thought this concept was particularly fitting for this piece so I use complementary colors on each level.
On some levels, it's not readily apparent what the dominant color is, like in the sunrise/sunset panel on the first level. However, once your brain recognizes the purple peaking through the mantilla on the left side, the yellow on the right side will automatically seem brighter.

Outer doors: purple (it's behind the mantilla) and yellow
Middle doors: orange (the photos makes it look mainly brown) and blue
Innermost level: green and red (but it's more pink because the little baby is pink)
